InternetTech's Transition to Woocomerce

Optimizing Operations and Enhancing Efficiency for Internet Tech

INTRODUCTION

Internet Tech is a prominent player in the online gaming and digital currency market, operating a network of 11 interconnected websites that specialize in selling OSRS gold, RS3 gold, and FIFA coins. These websites are categorized into two main segments: Runescape and FIFA, each requiring meticulous management to maintain consistency and efficiency across the board.

Managing these websites presented significant challenges, including operational inefficiencies, high development costs, and security concerns. These issues, coupled with the complexities of the digital currency market, required a strategic approach to optimize operations, improve security, and enhance overall efficiency.

Client Background

Internet Tech is a specialized online retailer with a strong focus on the digital gaming economy, particularly in the realms of Old School Runescape (OSRS), Runescape 3 (RS3), and FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT). The company has established a robust presence in these niches through its network of 11 interconnected websites, which offer in-game currency such as OSRS gold, RS3 gold, and FIFA coins to a global customer base. Internet Tech’s business model revolves around providing these digital goods through a secure and efficient online platform, catering to the needs of gamers who require a quick and reliable source of in-game currency to enhance their gaming experience.

The company’s operations are divided into two main categories:

  • Runescape Segment: Includes sites like rswinkel.nl, rsgoldbank.com, and runescapegold.nl among others, which specialize in selling gold for OSRS and RS3.
  • FIFA Segment: Includes sites like fifacoinservice.nl, fifacoins.com, and futcoins.com, which focus on selling FIFA coins for the popular FIFA Ultimate Team game mode.

Initially, Internet Tech operated on a Magento platform, which supported a unique automatic webshop builder for their clients. This system allowed clients to quickly set up an e-commerce store, which was critical during their early growth phase. However, over time, the costs associated with Magento, including development and maintenance, became unsustainable. The company faced legal challenges, increasing competition, and escalating costs due to the need for continuous support from Dutch developers, significantly impacting profitability.

To address these challenges, Internet Tech transitioned to WooCommerce on the recommendation of trusted partners. Although the WooCommerce setup didn’t offer the same advanced features as Magento, it provided a more cost-effective solution that aligned better with the company’s reduced scale of operations and budget constraints. The move allowed Internet Tech to stabilize its operations and focus on profitability.

Project Goals

The primary objective was to optimize Internet Tech’s operations, enhance their online sales process, and improve overall efficiency through centralized management, automated systems, and secure payment solutions. The project aimed to:

  • Website Development and Maintenance:
  • Build, customize, and maintain WordPress-based websites.
  • Assign a project manager to handle task requests and ensure timely execution.
  • Streamline Product Management:
  • Implement a centralized system for consistent product updates across all websites.
  • Automate Order Processing:
  • Integrate APIs for seamless order fulfillment, particularly for FIFA coins.
  • Enhance Payment Security:
  • Establish secure payment methods with a robust verification process.
  • Optimize Pricing Strategy:
  • Develop a dynamic pricing model that adjusts based on buying prices and desired margins.
  • SEO Optimization:
  • Provide SEO services to enhance organic traffic from search engines like Google and Bing.

The Challenge

  1. Multiple Websites, One Goal:
Managing 11 websites with unique pricing, product updates, and diverse payment methods was a complex task for Internet Tech. The challenge was to maintain consistent pricing and product information across all sites, ensure a seamless customer experience, and manage various payment methods efficiently. The interdependence of these websites meant that an issue on one site could impact the entire network.
  2. Verification and Compliance:
There was a critical need for a robust user verification process, especially for credit card payments, to ensure security and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Solutions Implemented

  1. Centralized Product Management:
A parent-child product model was established, with rswinkel.nl and fifacoinservice.nl acting as parent sites. This allowed product updates to propagate across all linked websites while maintaining unique margins per site.
  2. Automated Order Processing:
An API integration with the supplier’s website automated the order processing for FIFA coins, ensuring real-time updates and a seamless customer experience through white-labeled links on the thank-you page.
  3. Enhanced Payment Security:
A multi-step verification process was implemented for credit card payments, utilizing Veriff for user verification. Orders were tracked through a structured workflow to ensure secure transactions.
  4. Dynamic Pricing Model:
A pricing model was developed where the selling price was calculated by adding a configurable margin to the base buying price. This allowed Internet Tech to adjust prices dynamically based on market conditions.
  5. Website Development and Maintenance:
Custom WordPress-based websites were built and maintained across all 11 interconnected sites. The shift from Magento to WooCommerce provided a more cost-effective solution, aligning with Internet Tech’s need to reduce operational costs. While the WooCommerce setup was slightly less advanced than Magento, it met the company’s requirements for lower maintenance and development costs, allowing them to maintain profitability.
  6. SEO Optimization:
Basic SEO services were provided to enhance the websites’ visibility on popular search engines like Google and Bing, driving organic traffic and boosting the online presence of Internet Tech.
